Be The One

This year’s first day of school is unique for us.

For the first time in several years there are no pictures of the children side by side, and while Madeline is back in America well into her second week of college, Jackson has just left for the International school and experienced his first solo bus ride. More on that later.

It really is a different first day. There’s an oddness in being unable to impart those well-wishes to them both face to face, giving them hugs and watching each one go on their way, and I’d be lying if I said my heart wasn’t aching a little. But it’s going to be a really good year. My mind knows this, it’ll just take the rest of me a day or two to catch up. Until then I can at least send out a few thoughts their way, an online prayer and hope for my two children as they embark into their Freshman year of college and fifth grade.

Madeline and Jackson,

You certainly aren’t the only new kids on the block, but as you meet and encounter new people on a daily basis, alway remember to be the best version of who you are, keeping an open mind and an open heart. Be that person. Be the one, even when it’s difficult. Be the one that is nice. Be the one that smiles. Be the one who goes the extra mile. Be the one that understands. Be the one that slows down. Be the one that waits. Be the one that thinks first. Be the one who considers. Be the one that makes room. Be the one that invites. Be the one that volunteers. Be the one that sits out. Be the one that listens. Be the one that can. Be the one who says hello first. Be the one that cheers. Be the one that includes. Be the one that you will be proud to remember. Always.

I love you both so very much. Enjoy your new year and all the possibilities they will bring!

Much love,

Mom
