This is 18

Eighteen.

My heart...I can hardly believe this. It sounds cliche to even ask how it’s possible, but here you are, Madeline, 18 years wonderfully, beautifully, uniquely you.

You’ve always been a mini-grown up, a little more stoic, slightly more intuitive and understanding, and they’re just some of the qualities that have made you, my first and eldest child, such a blessing. You have such a good heart and thoughtful presence. Growing more confident within your moral compass, finding ways to share the compassion in your heart. Is it any wonder when people speak about you one of the first things they say is, “That girl is going to make a difference.” ?

Whether you choose to do it through your writing, your speaking, or your humor (which ranges from dry to downright silly), I know as you approach the end of one chapter to begin another, you’ll make that difference in an honest fashion that you can be proud of. And we’ll be proud of you.

You have such a light about you Madeline. I know I don’t say it often enough, but it’s true. You’ve grown into it and that spark that makes you so special radiates. It shines as brightly as your smile, and today on your birthday I wish for an abundance of happiness and love that can be carried with you always. May every dream come true, may you find the resolve within to make it happen, and may the laughter I hear so often grace the halls of every home you find.

I love you Mads, and your sweet, bright, silly, can’t-wait-to-vote-in-November, Netflix-name-changing, always-asking-permission-to-post-pictures, story-below-the-fold, best-grilled-cheese-making, big sister self.

Happy 18th Birthday!
