Cajun & Blues

Do you think they're having a good time?

I don't know, maybe they could take the shenanigans up just a notch but there's no way it's coming back down. We go to the Cajun & Blues Fest in Simi Valley every year and every year we eat, drink, and get our merry on until either the heat or fatigue sends us home. Usually it's the heat.

Finding true Southern cuisine out of the South is pretty tricky. Restaurants claim to serve "authentic Louisiana" this, "creole" that, but 9/10 it's as genuine as a snake oil salesman. This is the one time of year that our family can enjoy the tastes of home-outside of our home-while listening to the music. Our favorite stage is the Blues, but watching the zydeco and two-steppong at the Cajun tent will entertain for hours!

That said our real motivation for attending every year is the food. Without it the Fest wouldn't quite be what it is, and thankfully vendors travel from near and far locations to share their love for southern cuisine with the masses in Southern California. We have our favorites we always hit up: the peach cobbler lady, Hurricanes worthy of Pat O's, meat pie's straight from a Natchitoches kitchen, amazingly smoked andouille and turkey legs, alligator, oysters, beignets, red beans & rice, and all the fried candy bars you can throw a stick at.

But don't. Don't throw sticks. Use them to hold these deliciously molten desserts instead.

It's fun, it's tasty, and next year will be our final opportunity to indulge in our favorite local Fest, so listen up friends. If you are a local you need to get to the Cajun and Blues Fest in Simi Valley next year during Memorial Day weekend. You'll have the best time and have a little extra jazz in your step!
